Free E-Cycles to persons with orthopaedic disabilities

Guwahati,Jan 12: A Free Distribution of E-Cycles for Persons with Orthopaedic Disabilities with the themes of “SAKSHAM BHARAT – SAMARTH BHARAT” and the theme “Livelihood on Wheels- SAKSHAN EK NAYI UDAAN,” was organised at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Social Justice & Empowerment, Beltola, Guwahati, on 10th January . The programme was organised by Samadrishti, Kshamata Vikas Evam Anusandhan Mandal (SAKSHAM), North Assam, with the support of Altius, with the objective of promoting mobility, independence, and livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Arup Jyoti Kalita, Secretary, SAKSHAM North Assam, highlighted SAKSHAM’s commitment towards the empowerment and social inclusion of Divyangjan. He emphasised that improved mobility plays a vital role in enabling dignity, self-reliance, access to livelihoods, and participation in social life.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Lanu Aimul, Director, CRC Guwahati NIRTAR Government of India, highlighted the role of mobility aids in rehabilitation and social integration and commended SAKSHAM for its focused interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of persons with orthopaedic disabilities.
Addressing the gathering as the national representative of SAKSHAM, Chandrasekhar, Sangathan Mantri, SAKSHAM, spoke on the organisation’s vision and mission and its sustained efforts across Assam in the areas of rehabilitation, capacity building, advocacy, and assistive support for persons with disabilities.
Presenting the donor perspective, Dibyajyoti Khound, Circle CEO, Altius, stated that the initiative goes beyond welfare and represents an investment in human potential. He noted that the e-cycles would enable beneficiaries to access education, employment, healthcare, and community spaces, thereby fostering independence, confidence, and economic participation.
The programme was also addressed by the Guests of Honour, Dr. Navajyoti Bora, Principal, Dispur College who appreciated the collaborative efforts of SAKSHAM and Altius in advancing disability-inclusive development and encouraged stronger partnerships between government institutions and civil society organisations.
Rukma Bhuyan Saha, Sangha Chalak, RSS Guwahati Mahanagar, addressed the gathering as Chairperson and underscored the importance of collective responsibility and community engagement in ensuring empowerment of persons with disabilities.
The highlight of the programme was the symbolic distribution and formal handover of e-cycles to the beneficiaries, followed by hands-on orientation and training on operating the electric tricycles. In this program, 9 persons with disabilities (PwDs) from Assam were provided with these eco-friendly e-motorcycles to enhance their mobility and livelihood opportunities. The programme concluded with closing remarks by Mr. Manuj Tamuli, President, SAKSHAM North Assam, and a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Mithun Roy, Prabhari, SAKSHAM North East.
The initiative reaffirmed the shared commitment of SAKSHAM and Altius towards building an inclusive and empowered society where persons with disabilities can lead dignified, independent, and productive lives.
