Interview: Danube Kangjam, winner of 18th Sunsilk Mega Miss North East 2021

Manipur girl Danube Kangjam daughter of Birendra Singh Kangjam and Khuraijam Tarunibala won the18th Sunsilk Mega Miss North East 2021. She is a resident of Imphal West, Manipur.

In an exclusive interview with Guwahati Times, Kangjam speaking about her profession said, “I am a law student. I also work as an Anchor at ImpactTv. Before I started modeling, I was a fencing player and have represented Manipur at the National games too.”

Currently, Kangjam is pursuing BA LLB 3rd year from Vishal Law Institute, under Manipur University. She completed her schooling from Shishu Nistha Niketan and Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya.

Speaking about her modeling career, she said, “I started pageants and modeling at 16, when I was in middle school. I was often made fun of because of my size and height and I always had the feeling of exclusion. I lost confidence even before knowing what confidence means, but despite that, I started looking for ways that will make me feel confident and beautiful. When I first saw Jessica Ruth Cunville Marbaniang, the 13th Sunsilk Mega Miss Northeast, my interest in pageant and modeling started and later when I learned more about the purpose, beauty and relevance of beauty pageants, my passion grew and there’s no looking back since.”

What do you think about – Modelling as a career.
Modeling as a career for the past 5 years has been supporting my studies and immensely helped me be independent.

About your current competition
I was selected from the offline Imphal audition held on 7th November 2021.
Sunsilk Mega Miss Northeast has a very special place in my heart. And I’ve been preparing for years and focusing on it as if I was born for it.
It is one of a kind and I take immense pride in the fact that Sunsilk mega miss northeast has 3 ‘Equal’ winners, no one is either above or lower than the other. It has also removed the minimum height criteria aiming to give the opportunity to every woman who has the talent, potential, and confidence.
This competition was a learning experience, it taught me that in the end, the real competition is with ourselves. And throughout this journey, I always kept in mind one quote, ‘ practice as you’ve never won and performed as you’ve never lost. I’ll give my all to perform my every duty and responsibility and continue this legacy successfully.

Message for the People of Northeast and Manipur
Doing these trying times of the covid19 pandemic I want to tell my people to stay safe and strong, that we will one day win this battle and live our normal lives again.

As you are a winner now, what do you want to do for your society or community?
I want to influence people and lead them in positive ways. I want to encourage body positivity and self-acceptance and raise awareness about mindfulness while using social media which I believe is relevant and important.

How your family supported you throughout your journey
My family has always supported me in all possible ways, my mom suffered from Meningioma and not even once saw me on stage due to her health issues but her blessings were always with me, I could feel it and that gave me strength.

Any future plans working in movies or working as a model
I have two Manipuri music videos yet to be released and a few photoshoots in the coming days. I hope I can successfully continue my modeling works.

Hobbies
I love reading poems, one of my favorites is ‘Still I Rise ‘ by Maya Angelou. I also spend my leisure time doing decoupage art.

Aim in Life
To wear my country’s name across my chest at the Miss Universe. I’m also preparing for the Judiciary Services exam with an aim of becoming a judge.
