“Putting Self-Interest Above Assam’s Interest Is Nothing Short of Betrayal”: Jayanta Mallabaruah

Minister’s cryptic ‘Thought of the Day’ Facebook post sparks intense political speculation

Guwahati, June 24: A seemingly philosophical “Thought of the Day” shared by Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah on Facebook on Wednesday morning has triggered intense political speculation, with many attempting to decipher the message behind the carefully worded post.

In the facebook post, the Minister stated that “those who damage the interests of their birthplace and state for publicity and personal ambition can be considered traitors” adding that “only those who place the interests of the state above personal interests can be considered true patriots.”

The post, while not naming any individual, organization or incident, has generated considerable discussion in political circles owing to its timing and strong wording.

Observers have linked the message to recent developments in the state, particularly the protests and unrest witnessed in Guwahati on June 18. The incident had attracted national attention and was subsequently linked in public discourse to the cancellation of the proposed visit of the Prime Minister of Japan to Assam.

While no official connection has been established Baruah has not clarified regarding the intended target of the message, many view the post as a broader reminder that Assam’s development, reputation and long term interests must take precedence over personal ambitions, publicity driven politics and short-term considerations.
