ULFA-LEADER JIBON MORAN RETURNS TO MAINSTREAM

Senior ULFA-I leader Jibon Moran who was exempted from all the positions by the outfit is in Assam Police’s custody now.

Moran who managed the outfit’s finances was relieved from all the positions over his health conditions, stated ULFA-I in a press release. The 65-year old who had joined the United Liberation Front of Asom in 1984 returned to the mainstream after 3-long decades.

The Indian Army reportedly took him into custody when he entered Lazo village in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Assam Police took him into custody along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. He was brought to Assam Medical College and Hospital at Dibrugarh for medical tests.

Meanwhile, Assam director-general of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “He has surrendered. He has come willingly. It is good that he has returned to live as a common citizen. But he should not help the ULFA-I.”

On the other hand, Assam police gunned down a top ULFA-I leader in the Bongaigaon district on Thursday morning.

Dwipen Saud who replaced Drishti Rajkhowa as the insurgent group’s chief of western command was shot dead in a gunfight at Besimari under Manikpur police station in Bongaigaon district. His gunman Padum Ray was apprehended alive with arms and ammunition.

DGP Mahanta claimed the ULFA western command was planning some high-profile kidnappings in the State.

“We had intel that Ulfa Western Command was planning some high profile kidnapping in collaboration with other anti-India forces which now appears to be foiled.

Today’s successful operation is due to high-quality police intel input that worked out precisely for on-ground action,” DGP Assam tweeted.
