When Will the New Assam Government Take Oath? CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Shares Update

After the BJP-led NDA’s sweeping win in the Assam Assembly elections 2026, attention has shifted to the formation of the new government and the date of the swearing-in ceremony.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the timeline for government formation will be finalised within the next two to three days.

Speaking about the process, Sarma explained that it will follow the established constitutional procedure. The BJP legislative party will first elect its leader, who will then be endorsed as the leader of the NDA alliance. Following this, the leader will meet the Governor to stake claim to form the government.

“The entire process will be finalised in a day or two,” Sarma said, indicating that the oath-taking ceremony is likely to take place soon after the formalities are completed.

Key Highlights

  • Timeline: Date and time of the swearing-in ceremony to be finalised within 2–3 days
  • Central leadership role: The decision will be taken in consultation with BJP’s central leadership
  • PM’s presence: Narendra Modi will be formally invited to attend the ceremony

Sarma also noted that the process will involve coordination with senior party leaders, including BJP national president Nitin Nabín.

Despite the formal steps, the outcome appears largely certain. Having led the NDA to a dominant victory—winning 102 out of 126 seats—Sarma is widely expected to take oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term.

Meanwhile, in a gesture following the electoral win, Sarma visited Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at his residence in Guwahati, where the two leaders congratulated each other on the decisive mandate.
