₹8,970-Crore Guwahati-Tezpur Four-Lane Corridor Gets Cabinet Nod

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹8,970-crore four-lane, access-controlled corridor connecting Guwahati with Tezpur in Assam, marking a major push to strengthen road connectivity across the state.

The proposed Guwahati–Tezpur corridor will be developed along NH-15 and will cover approximately 135.87 kilometres. The project is expected to improve connectivity between Guwahati and central and northern Assam while reducing travel time and easing congestion on existing routes.

The corridor will include five major bypasses aimed at avoiding densely populated stretches and improving the movement of vehicles along the route. The project is being developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll model.

Beyond passenger connectivity, the highway is expected to support the movement of goods and strengthen access to Assam’s tea-producing areas, tourism destinations and commercial centres. The improved road network could also provide a more efficient connection between Guwahati and areas towards northern Assam.

The project comes as Assam continues to expand its road infrastructure to support growing urbanisation, trade and tourism. The new corridor is expected to play an important role in reducing congestion on existing highways while improving road safety and travel efficiency.

For Guwahati, the project represents another significant step in strengthening the city’s role as the principal transport and economic hub of the Northeast.
