Assam Opens Helplines as Over 100 Vehicles Reportedly Stranded in Meghalaya
Guwahati: The Assam government has launched dedicated helplines to assist residents stranded in Meghalaya or facing travel-related difficulties amid rising tensions over the safety of Assam-registered vehicles.
The move comes after reports that more than 100 Assam-registered vehicles, including several carrying tourists, were stranded in and around Sohra (Cherrapunji). Among those reportedly stranded are children and elderly passengers, raising concerns among their families.
Earlier in the day, a driver appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through a video message, urging the government to ensure the safe return of tourists and drivers stranded in Meghalaya. He claimed that several vehicles from Assam were unable to leave Sohra due to the prevailing situation.
Meanwhile, the Assam State Taxi Driver Union intensified its protest at Jorabat, preventing vehicles from entering Meghalaya. Drivers who had accepted bookings for Shillong were stopped at the Assam-Meghalaya border and asked to join the agitation.
The protesters have warned that no Assam vehicle will be allowed to enter Meghalaya until the neighbouring state assures the safety of Assam drivers and passengers. They have also announced an economic blockade against Meghalaya, demanding a joint assurance from both state governments before lifting the protest.
In response, the Assam government said the helpline service will coordinate with the Meghalaya Police and local authorities to provide assistance to stranded individuals. Family members or anyone aware of Assam residents or vehicles stranded in Meghalaya have been asked to share details such as the person’s name, contact number, vehicle registration number and current location.
