Congress convoy allegedly attacked during Nagaon bypoll campaign in Samaguri

Campaigning for the Nagaon bypoll was disrupted in Assam’s Samaguri area on Monday after a Congress campaign convoy was allegedly attacked with stones while travelling towards a public meeting at Barma.

The incident triggered tension in the area, with people gathering on the streets and waving black flags. Police and security personnel were deployed to control the situation, while a lathi charge was reportedly carried out to disperse the crowd. Stones were also reportedly thrown at CRPF personnel deployed at the spot.

The Congress convoy was carrying Lok Sabha MPs Rakibul Hussain and Gaurav Gogoi, Congress Legislature Party leader Wazed Ali Choudhury, Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur, party candidate Sibamoni Bora and several party legislators.

Congress leaders alleged that the convoy was targeted during the campaign. Mira Borthakur subsequently filed a complaint at Nagaon Sadar Police Station seeking registration of FIRs against those allegedly involved.

The incident has triggered a political exchange between the Congress and the BJP. Congress leaders alleged that BJP workers were behind the attack, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma rejected the allegation and attributed the incident to factional differences within the Congress.

The Chief Minister said the Congress leadership should take responsibility for internal differences, while Congress general secretary KC Venugopal accused the state government and BJP workers of being involved in the alleged attack.

The incident comes during campaigning for the Nagaon bypoll and has added tension to the ongoing political contest in Samaguri.

Police and authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine those responsible. Details regarding the extent of damage and any injuries were still emerging.
