Assam Regiment jawan allegedly beaten to death in Mizoram, eight held

An Assam Regiment jawan was allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths in Mizoram’s Kolasib district, with police arresting eight people in connection with the incident.

The deceased was identified as 29-year-old Zakaria Lalhriattluanga. According to police, he had recently arrived in Mizoram after availing leave from his posting in Jammu and Kashmir and was travelling towards his native New Builum village.

The incident took place near Bualpui village along NH-306 on Sunday evening.

Kolasib Superintendent of Police Lalrinpuia Varte said eight people, including a woman and two minors, have been arrested in connection with the case.

According to reports, the incident followed an altercation near the Coffee Board’s coffee plantation area. Two trucks were reportedly unable to pass each other because of the poor condition of the road, leading to an argument between the drivers.

The youths allegedly intervened during the dispute and attacked the jawan’s friend. Zakaria, who was travelling in a truck driven by his friend, was subsequently attacked, police said.

The circumstances leading to the fatal assault are being investigated by Mizoram Police. The arrested persons are being questioned as part of the investigation.

Police are also examining the sequence of events leading up to the assault and the individual roles of those arrested.

Further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation and evidence collected in the case.
