Himanta Calls ‘Paschimbanga Divas’ a Defining Moment in India’s History
Guwahati, June 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended greetings to the people of West Bengal on the occasion of Paschimbanga Divas, describing the day as a significant chapter in India’s history.
In a message shared on social media, Sarma said the observance commemorates the efforts of Syama Prasad Mookerjee and other nationalist leaders who played a role in ensuring that a part of Bengal remained within the Indian Union during the Partition of 1947. He noted that the region later became a refuge for many Hindus displaced during that period.
The Assam Chief Minister stated that the historical importance of the day had not received adequate recognition for many years. According to him, people of West Bengal can now acknowledge and take pride in this part of their history.
Paschimbanga Divas is being observed on June 20, marking the day in 1947 when the Bengal Legislative Assembly voted in favour of creating a separate province, which later became West Bengal following Partition.
Sarma concluded his message by wishing peace, prosperity and progress for the people of West Bengal and prayed for the state’s continued development.
