Northeast violence falls 77% in 2025 amid intensified security push

NEW DELHI: Violence across India’s Northeast declined by 77 per cent in 2025, according to a recent Defence Ministry report, reflecting a significant improvement in the region’s overall security situation.

The report said security forces neutralised 33 terrorists and apprehended 1,066 insurgents during the year. The decline in violence has been attributed to intensified security operations, stronger border management and continued efforts to address insurgency-related challenges.

The improvement comes after years of counter-insurgency operations and measures aimed at strengthening security along the region’s international borders. Authorities have also continued to focus on disrupting militant networks and preventing the movement of insurgents and illegal arms.

However, security challenges remain in parts of the Northeast, particularly Manipur, where ethnic tensions and sporadic violence continue to affect the security environment.

The latest figures indicate a broader decline in insurgency-related violence across the region, even as security agencies maintain heightened vigilance in vulnerable areas.

The government has continued to emphasise a combination of security measures, border management and engagement with armed groups as part of efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Northeast.
