Sarbananda Sonowal Announces Maritime Education Push, New Mercantile Marine Department in Guwahati
Guwahati: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a series of initiatives aimed at transforming Assam into a key maritime education and inland waterways hub. The announcement includes the establishment of a Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in Guwahati and expanded maritime training opportunities for students from the Northeast.
Speaking at a maritime event in Guwahati, Sonowal said the new MMD office will enable seafarers and maritime professionals from the Northeast to access certification, licensing, and regulatory services without travelling to other parts of the country. He said the move is expected to improve ease of access and encourage greater participation from the region in India’s growing maritime sector.
The Union Minister also announced new scholarship and skill development initiatives to encourage youth from Assam and other Northeastern states to pursue careers in shipping, inland waterways, logistics, and port management. The programmes will be implemented in collaboration with leading maritime institutions.
Sonowal highlighted the Centre’s continued investment in the Brahmaputra (National Waterway 2), stating that improved waterways infrastructure, cargo movement, and passenger transport would generate employment and strengthen regional connectivity.
The initiatives form part of the government’s broader vision to position the Northeast as a strategic gateway for trade with Southeast Asia under the Act East Policy.
