Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Won’t Impact Tribal Communities: Says Assam BJP MLA Rupali Langthasa
Assam BJP MLA Rupali Langthasa has said that the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not impact the tribal communities of the state, asserting that their traditional way of life will remain intact as it has been for generations. She stated that the legislation is designed in a manner that does not interfere with tribal customs, traditions, or social practices.
Langthasa also reacted to comments linked to the Pawan Khera case, alleging that the Congress leader made unfounded remarks against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife without adequate understanding of the matter. She added that the issue would be dealt with in accordance with legal procedures.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that the Assam Cabinet has cleared the implementation of the UCC, with the Bill set to be introduced in the Legislative Assembly on May 26. He said the proposed legislation will regulate areas such as marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships, and mandatory registration of marriages and divorces.
Sarma further clarified that the framework has been specifically designed for Assam’s context, while reiterating that tribal communities will remain outside its purview.
