Assam: Bijoy Malakar’s Massive Mandate Strengthens BJP’s Hold in Barak Valley
With one of the biggest victory margins in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, BJP leader Bijoy Malakar has further strengthened his political position in Barak Valley and emerged as a major face of the party in southern Assam. Winning by more than 80,000 votes from the Ram Krishna Nagar constituency, Malakar secured one of the highest victory margins among all MLAs in the state, underlining his growing influence in the region.
Born on January 1, 1980, Bijoy Malakar belongs to the R.K. Nagar area of Karimganj, now part of Sribhumi district. He is the son of Sankar Malakar and Pranoti Malakar. According to electoral records, he completed the Praveshika Examination, equivalent to Class 10, under the Assam Sanskrit Board. Before joining politics full-time, he worked as a businessman, a background that helped him understand local economic and social issues closely.
Malakar represents a Scheduled Caste (SC) constituency and is seen as a leader with strong grassroots connections. His political rise began in 2019 when he contested the Ratabari by-election on a BJP ticket after the seat fell vacant following the election of sitting MLA Kripanath Mallah to Parliament.
The by-election was closely watched in Barak Valley politics. Malakar emerged victorious and entered the Assam Legislative Assembly for the first time. He later retained the seat, which was reconfigured as Ram Krishna Nagar, in the 2021 Assembly elections. However, his biggest political success came in the 2026 polls.
In the latest election, Malakar secured more than 1.34 lakh votes against Congress candidate Suruchi Roy. He registered a vote share of around 70.7 percent and won by nearly 83,765 votes. Political observers described the result as one of the most decisive mandates witnessed in Assam in recent years.
The victory is being seen not only as a reflection of Malakar’s personal popularity but also as a sign of the BJP’s growing organisational strength in the Bengali-speaking Barak Valley. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a leader with close grassroots contact across communities.
In the region’s politically sensitive landscape, Malakar has managed to connect with tea garden workers, farmers, traders and rural families. BJP insiders often describe him as a “silent worker” who focuses more on constituency work and public service than aggressive rhetoric.
During his tenure, he has repeatedly focused on local development concerns such as road connectivity, flood management, healthcare infrastructure and education. Flooding continues to remain a major issue in several low-lying areas of Karimganj and adjoining regions, and Malakar has consistently raised the matter publicly.
As a businessman-turned-politician, he has also advocated for self-employment opportunities and skill development initiatives for the youth. Supporters credit him for maintaining regular public outreach through constituency visits and communication with residents.
Another key factor behind Malakar’s rise has been his close political association with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. During the 2019 by-election campaign, Sarma actively campaigned for him and participated in public outreach programmes in the constituency. BJP leaders at the time viewed Malakar as an emerging political face in Barak Valley.
Over the years, Malakar has continued to remain closely aligned with the BJP leadership and has regularly represented Barak Valley concerns at party and government forums. Party insiders believe his role has become increasingly important in strengthening the BJP’s political network in southern Assam.
Despite his growing popularity, Malakar has also faced political scrutiny, including petitions related to his family’s citizenship history before the Gauhati High Court. However, he has continued serving as the elected representative of the constituency while maintaining a development-focused political narrative.
With the BJP government returning to power in Assam under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bijoy Malakar is now seen as one of the most significant political voices from Barak Valley. His massive victory in 2026 has strengthened his standing not only in Ram Krishna Nagar but also within the broader BJP organisation in Assam.
