Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup 2026 Journey Ends as Portugal Suffer 1-0 Loss to Spain
Guwahati,7: The curtain fell on Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup career on Tuesday as Portugal were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a narrow 1-0 loss to Spain in the Round of 16.
The 41-year-old legend, playing in his sixth and likely final World Cup since making his debut in 2006, led Portugal onto the field one last time on football’s biggest stage. Despite a spirited performance, Portugal could not find the net and bowed out to their neighbours.
Ronaldo said, “Before me, Portugal had nothing. I have won three titles for Portugal. The biggest titles the national team has ever won were the European Championship in 2016, which is just as significant to me as a World Cup.”
Ronaldo confirmed that this tournament marked the end of his World Cup journey.
“It was my last World Cup. But I will now have time to reflect and be with my family. I would not be making any rash decision,” he added, stopping short of announcing his full international retirement.
During his time with Portugal, Ronaldo helped the nation win Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025—the first major trophies in the country’s history.
